Two Days in Osaka

Osaka tower records neon

We travelled around Japan for nearly two weeks in 2017 for our honeymoon, and it was one of the best travelling experience I’ve ever had.

That said, if I was to plan the trip again, I’d probably extend our stay in Osaka. We were only there for two days, and it didn’t feel like enough time. We spent most of our time there eating and walking. Osaka is known as the nation’s kitchen, and it delivered on this moniker in spades.

Osaka was quite a contrast with Kyoto, where we had stayed for the previous week or so. There’s a similar mix of ancient and modern, but Osakans are known for their warm hospitality and friendly demeanour and this was an absolute delight after some slightly snooty interactions with people in Kyoto.

I shot all of these photos on a Sony A7ii and a mix of adapted Canon lenses. Mostly the excellent 40mm 2.8 and the 24-105mm zoom.

I didn’t end up shooting much film in Japan because my plan was to buy a film camera and some rolls while we were out there. I did this in the end, but not until our penultimate day, so I only shot one frantic roll while I was getting used to my new Olympus OM2 and your first roll with a new camera is never the best. Still, I got some keepers, which I’m sure I’ll post at some point.
